The average site reliability engineer (SRE) salary in the United States is about $131,000 to $160,000 a year in base pay. Total compensation is higher where employers pay in stock: Levels.fyi, whose data leans toward technology companies, reports a median of about $201,000, and the top quarter of its contributors earn more than about $274,000.
In India, Indeed and Payscale report average base pay of about ₹13 lakh to ₹17.5 lakh a year. Levels.fyi reports about ₹33 lakh in median total compensation, and the top quarter of its India contributors earn more than ₹48 lakh.
These figures were collected on October 11, 2026 from Indeed, Built In, Payscale, and Levels.fyi. The sources differ because each gathers different data from different people. Treat every number here as a dated benchmark for judging an offer. Your own figure depends on experience, location, employer, and how much of the package is stock or bonus.
How much does an SRE earn in the United States?
Average base pay for a US site reliability engineer is about $131,000 to $160,000 a year across three national sources. Total compensation, which adds stock and bonus, has a median of about $201,000 among Levels.fyi contributors.
| Source | Figure | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Indeed | Average base salary: about $160,000 (range about $97,000 to $265,000) | About 3,000 salaries from job postings over 36 months |
| Built In | Average base salary: about $131,000. Average total cash: about $147,000 | Anonymous employee responses |
| Payscale | Average base salary: about $131,000 (10th to 90th percentile: $85,000 to $172,000) | 847 salary profiles |
| Levels.fyi | Median total compensation: about $201,000 (25th to 75th percentile: about $160,000 to $274,000) | Self-reported base, stock, and bonus, leaning toward technology employers |
Sources: Indeed, Built In, Payscale, and Levels.fyi, accessed October 11, 2026.
Indeed has the largest dataset drawn from job postings. Its three-year window means the average includes older postings as well as current ones, and a listed range can differ from the offer a candidate accepts. Built In and Payscale rely on what employees report, and both land close to $30,000 below Indeed.
Levels.fyi is the better guide when an offer includes a large stock grant. A quarter of its US contributors report more than about $274,000 a year. Its contributors lean toward large technology employers, so read it as the equity-paying end of the market and not as a national sample.
How much does an SRE earn in India?
Indeed and Payscale report average base pay for a site reliability engineer in India of about ₹13 lakh to ₹17.5 lakh a year. One lakh is 100,000 rupees, so that range is ₹1.3 million to ₹1.75 million. Median total compensation among Levels.fyi contributors is about ₹33 lakh.
| Source | Figure | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Indeed | Average base salary: about ₹12.9 lakh (range about ₹7.5 lakh to ₹22.3 lakh) | 29 salaries from job postings over 36 months |
| Payscale | Average base salary: about ₹17.5 lakh (10th to 90th percentile: about ₹4 lakh to ₹30 lakh) | 272 salary profiles |
| Levels.fyi | Median total compensation: about ₹33.1 lakh (25th to 75th percentile: about ₹22.4 lakh to ₹48.1 lakh) | Self-reported base, stock, and bonus, leaning toward technology employers |
Sources: Indeed, Payscale, and Levels.fyi, accessed October 11, 2026.
Indeed's India average rests on just 29 salaries, so read it as a rough marker. Payscale has 272 salary profiles and reports a higher average. Neither sample is a census of Indian SRE pay.
The Levels.fyi figures show what equity-paying technology employers offer. Half of its India contributors report more than about ₹33 lakh, a quarter report more than ₹48 lakh, and a tenth report more than ₹64 lakh. That does not make the lower averages wrong. An offer with ₹24 lakh of fixed pay, a variable bonus, and stock belongs in a different comparison from a base-only figure at a smaller employer. City and experience also vary across the underlying records.
What do base salary, total compensation, and CTC mean?
Base salary is the fixed cash an employee earns over a year before deductions. A bonus is variable cash, often tied to personal, team, or company outcomes. Equity is ownership, usually stock or options earned over a vesting schedule.
Total compensation usually combines base salary, expected bonus, and the portion of equity expected to vest during the year. A source may use a narrower definition, so read its method before comparing figures.
In India, employers often quote cost to company, or CTC. Its contents vary. A CTC figure can include fixed pay, variable pay, employer contributions, insurance, gratuity, and equity. It is not monthly take-home pay. Ask for each component separately.
These definitions explain much of the gap between the sources. Indeed's average base salary and Levels.fyi's median total compensation answer two different questions. For the same reason, do not average the figures in the tables together.
How much do SREs earn by experience level?
Payscale reports average total compensation of about $86,000 for a US SRE with under one year of experience and about $116,000 with one to four years. In India, the equivalent figures are about ₹5.5 lakh and ₹8.3 lakh. These figures include variable cash according to Payscale's definition; they are not base-salary averages.
| Career stage | United States | India |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level (under 1 year) | About $86,000 | About ₹5.5 lakh |
| Early career (1 to 4 years) | About $116,000 | About ₹8.3 lakh |
Source: Payscale's experience breakdowns for the United States and India, accessed October 11, 2026. Payscale defines entry level as under one year of experience and early career as one to four years.
For a separate senior benchmark, Payscale's experienced-SRE page for India reports about ₹27.1 lakh in average base salary from 75 profiles. It measures base pay, so it should not be compared directly with the total-compensation rows above.
Read the table with some care. The entry-level row rests on few reports: 47 salaries in the US and 12 in India. In Indian job listings, an entry-level engineer may be called a fresher. Payscale's figures are self-reported, and its breakdown has no separate stock component. They therefore cannot establish the value of an equity-heavy offer.
Level matters as much as years. A senior engineer who owns several critical services, designs shared automation, and leads incidents is in a different market from an engineer entering production operations.
How do you compare two SRE offers?
Convert every component to the same annual view, and keep guaranteed cash separate from variable or uncertain value.
Suppose a US offer contains:
Base salary $150,000
Target bonus: 10% of base $15,000
Stock grant: $80,000 over 4 years $20,000 per year
Target recurring annual value $185,000
The $185,000 figure assumes the target bonus is paid and the stock keeps the value used in the offer. A signing bonus belongs in a separate first-year calculation because it does not repeat.
Now consider an illustrative India offer:
Fixed cash ₹24.0 lakh
Target variable pay: 10% ₹2.4 lakh
Stock grant: ₹16 lakh over 4 years ₹4.0 lakh per year
Target annualised value ₹30.4 lakh
The employer may include contributions and benefits elsewhere in CTC. Ask what reaches the payslip, how the variable amount is calculated, when equity vests, and whether unvested equity depends on continued employment.
Then compare the work itself:
- What services will you own?
- How often are you on-call, and how large is the rotation?
- Is there a second responder and a clear escalation path?
- How much time goes to engineering improvements versus manual tickets?
- How are bonus and equity values determined?
- Does the location or remote-work policy change pay?
- Will the role help you learn the systems you want to master?
A larger headline number may carry a heavier on-call burden or more uncertain equity. The offer document and the conversation with the team matter more than a salary-site average.
What affects an SRE's salary?
Scope and level move an offer further than the job title does. These details explain most of the difference between two SRE offers:
- the level and actual scope of ownership
- employer size, industry, and equity policy
- location and remote-pay rules
- fixed salary, target bonus, stock, and vesting schedule
- on-call frequency, incident load, and any separate on-call pay
- specialist requirements in security, compliance, networking, databases, or AI infrastructure
- the balance between planned engineering and reactive support
No single certification or tool guarantees a particular increase. Employers pay for the scope you can handle and the evidence that you can handle it.
Are SRE jobs growing?
Some indicators show recovering demand in 2026, but the US and India sources below do not establish an SRE-specific growth rate:
- US tech job postings are at a three-year high. CompTIA's analysis of September 2026 data counted 625,633 active tech job postings, the highest total in more than three years. Employers added 272,040 new postings that month, 16% more than in September 2025. DevOps engineer, the closest title the report tracks, was among the five most-posted roles.
- Software development postings are recovering. Indeed Hiring Lab's July 8, 2026 analysis reports that US software development postings have grown by almost 15% since late February 2025, while postings across all occupations fell 7% over the same period.
- The ten-year forecast is positive. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 10% growth for software developers from 2025 to 2035, which it describes as much faster than the average for all occupations. Its combined category for software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers has about 106,100 projected openings a year.
- UK SRE posting counts are up. IT Jobs Watch counted 167 permanent site reliability engineer postings in the six months to October 11, 2026, against 69 in the same period a year earlier and 171 in 2024. SRE's share of all permanent postings stayed at 0.14% year over year, so the count rose alongside the broader market.
- Indian employers list the skills as a priority. A September 2026 Taggd review of hiring at global capability centres, the technology centres that multinational companies run in India, ranks DevOps third among ten priority skill areas and says DevOps and site reliability skills remain critical.
Read these signals with two limits in mind. A posting is not a hire: the same CompTIA release reports that employment in US tech occupations fell by roughly 6,000 in September. Software development postings also remain about 27.5% below their pre-pandemic level, and senior roles made up 71% of the increase between May 2025 and May 2026. The direction is up, the recovery starts from a low base, and experienced engineers are seeing most of it.
SRE hiring also appears under different titles. Useful searches include:
- Site Reliability Engineer
- Service Reliability Engineer
- Production Engineer
- Infrastructure Engineer
- Platform Engineer
- Systems Development Engineer
- Cloud Reliability Engineer
- DevOps Engineer with production ownership
Read each description carefully. A posting that uses “SRE” for manual ticket handling may offer little engineering work. A platform or production role may teach strong reliability skills even when the title does not contain SRE. Platform engineering vs SRE explains how to tell the roles apart, and Will AI replace SREs? covers how AI is changing the work.
Which skills do SRE employers value?
Employers look for six abilities. Learn each one through the outcome it helps you produce.
Investigate a running system
Learn Linux processes, filesystems, HTTP, the Domain Name System (DNS), TCP/IP, load balancing, and database basics. These help you follow a request through a service and test why it failed.
Write reliable automation
Use a language such as Python, Go, or Java to replace repetitive work with maintainable software. Include tests, useful error handling, scoped permissions, and a way to roll back.
Operate infrastructure
Employers commonly ask for one major cloud, containers, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code. The exact tools vary. Learn what problem each one solves instead of collecting names.
Measure reliability
Know how to use logs, metrics, and traces, and how to turn a customer journey into a service-level indicator and objective. Learn monitoring and the golden signals alongside the tools.
Handle change and failure
Practise safe releases, incident response, on-call troubleshooting, capacity planning, and recovery. Employers need evidence that you can reduce harm while the cause is still uncertain.
Work across teams
Write clear incident updates, document a decision, review a design, and explain risk in language that product and engineering partners can use. Technical depth loses value when nobody can understand the conclusion.
Can SRE be your first job?
Yes, although many postings ask for previous software, infrastructure, DevOps, or production-support experience. A first-time candidate needs evidence that they can write code, troubleshoot a running service, automate a repeated task, and verify recovery.
Common paths include:
- A software engineer takes on monitoring, deployment, and production ownership.
- A systems, cloud, or DevOps engineer strengthens programming and software design.
- A support or operations engineer builds automation and demonstrates structured incident investigation.
You can create that evidence with a small service. Define an SLO, add monitoring, introduce a controlled failure, write a short incident record, and automate one repeated repair. The SRE 101 track covers those ideas in sequence.
Exercise: compare value and risk
Offer A pays $165,000 base, a 10% target bonus, and $120,000 in stock over four years. Offer B pays $180,000 base, no target bonus, and no equity.
Work out the target recurring annual value of each offer, and decide which one carries more risk. Then compare your reasoning with this one:
Offer A has target recurring annual compensation of $211,500: $165,000 base, plus $16,500 target bonus, plus $30,000 a year in stock. Offer B has $180,000, all of it base salary.
Offer A has the higher target value. Offer B has more guaranteed cash and less exposure to bonus outcomes or the stock price. Before choosing, compare the on-call schedule, role level, service scope, health benefits, retirement contributions, location terms, stock vesting, and first-year payments. The arithmetic narrows the question. It does not choose the job for you.
Quick answers
What is the average SRE salary in 2026?
In the US, the sources here report average base pay of about $131,000 to $160,000 a year, and Levels.fyi reports about $201,000 in median total compensation. In India, Indeed and Payscale report average base pay of about ₹13 lakh to ₹17.5 lakh, and Levels.fyi reports about ₹33 lakh in median total compensation. All figures were collected on October 11, 2026.
What is the starting salary for an SRE?
Payscale reports average total compensation of about $86,000 for US SREs with under one year of experience and about ₹5.5 lakh in India. These are not base-salary figures, and they rest on small samples of 47 and 12 salaries. Individual offers can differ substantially.
Is SRE a high-paying career?
Yes, especially at senior levels and at employers that grant equity. A quarter of Levels.fyi's US contributors report more than about $274,000 in total compensation, and a quarter of its India contributors report more than ₹48 lakh. The range is wide, so compare the role, level, location, base salary, bonus, and equity.
Does every SRE role include on-call?
Many do, because the role owns production reliability. The frequency, supported services, incident load, and escalation help vary widely. Ask for those details before accepting an offer.
How often do SRE salary figures change?
Constantly. Salary sites update as new submissions and job postings arrive, so check the linked sources again when you negotiate. Also compare current local listings for the same level and type of employer.
